Word of The Year

As the year draws to a close, I’ve turned my sights to getting prepared for the new year ahead. One tradition I started years ago was selecting a single word for the year to help me stay focused on my goals. In a given moment, it’s hard to rattle off a list of what I want to accomplish for the year and remain focused, but a single word that captures the spirit of it all quite simple.

Some years, a single word comes easily to mind and other years I have to spend more time reflecting and narrowing it down. Here’s how I try to narrow it down:

  1. Make a list of my goals for the year.

  2. Try to identify a theme that captures the spirit of most of my goals.

    • Career

    • Finance

    • Family

    • Home

    • Health

  3. Reflect on words that represent that theme - some ideas to jog your mind on the printable below.

  4. Sit with those words. “Try them on.” See how my mind and body to respond to hearing them.

  5. Pick the word that feels the most representative of my goals and that gets be excited to go after them.

I created a brief worksheet to help guide you through these steps. Download it here!
